I just tried to commit and got:

FWIW, rather than trying to recover the repo, I just deleted it and cloned
it fresh.

Sounds like Git in a nutshell actually! As you get used to using it, these
situations stop occurring (unless EGit is the problem; try TortoiseGit
perhaps?)
